Lower Cholesterol Snacks

lower cholesterol snacks
What are some healthy foods i can eat?

in particular for breakfast and snacks…
besides fruit, yogurt, cereal/oats and milk
i need to lower my cholesterol level by quite a bit, and i know i need to do exercise but i find it especially hard to choose a healthy snack when i don’t feel like fruit or choose a good healthy breakfast (milk and yogurt both make me feel nauseous and I’m not a fan of cereal)

thank you!!!
oh and if you have any good recipes that would be great!!!
thanks again :)
oh and id like to add that i dont need to lose weight, if anything im slightly underwieght but i have a high cholesterol level

I have the exact same problem, my cholesterol is sky high but I’m small-framed and fairly slim. The best thing to do is first identify the taste and texture of what you want to snack on. For example when I crave a packet of crisps I try to find something both crunchy and salty; baked wholemeal pita with salsa, carrot sticks with hummous, wholewheat crackers with chilli cottage cheese, or a handful of pistachios. Keep in mind that unsaturated fats are still good for you, so cook with liberal amounts of olive oil, snack on nuts and eat a moderate number of eggs. Also, salmon is your friend.

Have you tried soy milk or rice milk instead? I couldn’t imagine having muesli without soy milk. Experiment with different cereals; maybe try to find a granola which is low in saturated fat. Granola is the gateway cereal.

For breakfast I often have butter beans or mashed up cannellini beans on toast, with whatever spices I have lying around. Or sometimes a poached egg on a good grainy bread with a side of steamed asparagus and lots of pepper. Sauteed tomato and mushroom is another option. Otherwise I do the yoghurt/muesli/fruit thing.

Most recipes can be modified with a bit of creativity (e.g. if you bake cakes/muffins you can generally substitute butter for olive oil and apple puree). I also follow various food/health blogs which constantly post really interesting recipes that are always healthy.

I’ve found that exercising and eating well when already underweight calls for lots of snacking and lots of carbohydrates, I run only 15kms a week but I feel completely f*cked if I haven’t been eating carbs. Finding a good wholegrain bread is essential. Make sure you’re providing yourself with as much energy as you can when you take up an exercise routine.

Best of luck! I’m assuming it’s genetic for you since you’re underweight? Which means like me, you probably never had to watch what you ate. It is really hard at first but I’ve manage to lower my cholesterol by quite a bit, additionally I feel so much better about myself now that I exercise and eat well. Sometimes I think having high cholesterol was the best thing that ever happened for my well-being.
