If you are over 25 then you should ideally have a cholesterol test done every five years to ensure your levels are safe. But what do the results mean and what is a good reading?

You should have 3 reading on your cholesterol test for LDL, HDL and also triglycerides which are fats too. A good set of levels should look like something like this.
Total Cholesterol: 200 mg/dl
LDL: 100 mg/dl
HDL: 40 mg/dl
Trig: Less than 150 mg/dl
What you need to bear in mind is that the ratio of bad to good is more important than your total figure. A ratio of 3 or 2:1 LDL to HDL is optimal even if your total number is over 220. Now you know this you are in a stronger position to discuss possible remedies with your doctor and try not to go on the over used statin drugs.
Many doctors prescribe these harmful medications too often and they can have some serious side effects. They can increase your risk of a heart attack and also lower your cholesterol too much leading to depression, brain impairment and increasing your exposure to cancer.
