Ldl Cholesterol Niacin
The doctor told me my cholesterol is 222 which I know is high.?
But he says my hdl is only 37 and my triglycerides are over 400 and my ldl is so high they can’t even read it. How common is it that it can’t even be read. I am scared as my father and a lot of his relative passed away at young ages of heart disease, I am ready to change my life now. I will start meds including niacin and a strong cholesterol lowering pill, I will exercise daily and eat oatmeal and an apple for breakfast, and lots of chicken and fish and fruits and veggies.
It isn’t that the LDL can’t be “read”. LDL is actually calculated using the other cholesterol values. If your triglycerides are too high, then it becomes too difficult to accurately estimate your LDL. It is good that you are willing to take such strong stances on your health. Be sure to stick with it 6 months from now, as studies show that after 6 months only about 50% of patients are still taking their statins as prescribed.
The recommended levels for a cholesterol panel:
Triglycerides – less than 150
HDL – greater than 40 for men, 50 for women
LDL – depends on other diseases, etc., but in general less than 130
Something else that you and your doctor could discuss is something called your Framingham Risk. This is a scale that provides an estimated percent risk of having a heart attack in the next ten years. If you have a strong family history of cardiovascular disease, then your score may be pretty high, and can help determine your treatment regimen.
